Composer
Alex studied BMus(hons) Composition at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, under Lynne Plowman & Robert Spearing, with input from Peter Reynolds and Michael McCartney. On graduating, he won the Mervyn Burtch Composition Prize in 2011. He has since undertaken various commissions, mostly choral works, and has written pieces for the Cardiff Polyphonic Choir, The Handful, and Llandaff Cathedral Choral Society. In 2020, two of his carols, A Babe is born and Cantemus in choro, were performed in a virtual Christmas concert by his three choirs, entitled, Winter Legends, Christmas Bells. Cantemus in choro was written especially for this programme and was based on four carols from Piæ Cantiones (1582).
His cantata, Let earth and heaven combine, for Violin, Cello & SATB choir was premiered in 2019 by The Handful in Prior Park College Chapel, Bath and was featured alongside music by Roth, Vasks, Palestrina & Lassus.
His song cycle, To eyes' fascination, was premiered at the Riverfront, Newport in 2013 and described as working "brilliantly," "creating intriguing sonorities and images" in the South Wales Argus.
